Tank Inspection FAQ

Your questions answered about tank inspections in the North Las Vegas, NV area.

Under 40 CFR 112 (SPCC Rule), facilities in North Las Vegas that store 1,320 gallons or more of oil in aboveground storage tanks (each container ≥ 55 gal) and have a reasonable expectation of discharge into navigable waters—such as the Las Vegas Wash and its outfall into Lake Mead on the Colorado River—must maintain a written SPCC Plan. That plan must include documented inspections of tanks, piping, valves, and containment systems to demonstrate ongoing integrity and spill readiness.

Nevada does not maintain AST-specific technical regulations for most aboveground tanks; the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) explicitly limits its storage tank program to underground storage tanks and a narrow carve-out for marina ASTs. For all other aboveground tanks, applicable requirements flow from the federal SPCC Rule and, for fire and safety matters, the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Fire Code (NAC 477), which adopts the International Fire Code by reference. Inspections are commonly performed under STI SP001 (for shop-built tanks) or API 653 (for field-erected tanks), consistent with SPCC Plan integrity-testing obligations.

Genesis Inspection Services helps North Las Vegas businesses and industrial operators throughout Clark County meet their tank compliance obligations by providing certified API 653 and STI SP001 inspections, complete inspection documentation, and the technical support needed to satisfy both EPA SPCC regulations and Nevada state requirements under the Nevada State Fire Marshal's Fire Code.

API 653 inspections are required for large, field-erected aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) that are constructed to the API 650 standard. In North Las Vegas, these tanks are commonly used by petroleum terminals, manufacturing plants, chemical facilities, and utilities to store fuel, oil, or hazardous liquids. If your tank is over 75,000 gallons, made from welded-steel construction, has a diameter of 30 feet or more, or a height of 50 feet or more, there's a high likelihood it falls under API 653 requirements.
STI SP001 inspections are typically required for shop-fabricated aboveground storage tanks under 75,000 gallons, often found at gas stations, commercial facilities, and industrial properties. If you're storing oil or hazardous substances in North Las Vegas, you may be subject to the EPA's Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) rules for this inspection.
The frequency depends on the tank size, contents, and regulatory classification. In general, API 653 recommends formal external inspections every 5 years and internal inspections every 10-20 years. STI SP001 inspection frequency is determined by their size, category, and risk factors. We can help determine your specific schedule.
Yes. All our inspectors hold API 653 and STI SP001 certifications and are trained in accordance with industry and regulatory standards. We are fully qualified to perform inspections anywhere in Nevada, including North Las Vegas.
